|Roland RE-501 Chorus-Echo (Space Echo, tape delay)

Completely functional except for a grounding problem with the spring reverb knob. When the knob is at any position other than fully counter-clockwise, there is a buzz. Other than that, the unit works perfectly. virtually no tape hiss/noise that the earlier space-echoes have. This is truly the best tape-echo machine ever made by man. The most evolved and gorgeous pinnacle of the tape echo before they were replaced by the cheaper and bland digital units. if you want analogue warmth and unpredictable beauty of vintage delay, you have to use tape echo. If you don't want the tape wow and flutter and noise that come with analogue delay, you must get this unit, in which many problems with previous devices were eliminated.|
cosmetically, my unit is in very very good shape. It sat on a shelf in a speaker shop for many years as "some old thing from the eighties", therefore was used very little before I bought it. Except for the problem with the one knob (reverb), it has served me very well. I also own digital modelling delays and have used the modelling software, which are always a bit "too mathmatical" in their timing. The chorus echo yeilds a perfect match of warmth and *slight* randomness to the echo which is much more organic. (one of my custom tricks is to run a tape echo copy, such as my Line 6 delay modeler alongside with the RE-501. This combination is lush and very organic, I recommend this technique especially for predominantly electronic musicians).

Not only is this an eye-catching piece of vintage gear, but functionally, it performs feats that no other peice of tech (before or since) can match. Also, these units are continually going up in value, sought after by collectors and also are easily repaired/upgraded with a fairly standard range of electronics.
